about

Dedicated to Colin Toline

This track feels so much like something that he and I would have worked on when Alewife was essentially the two of us, mapping out the tracks in his "home studio" (bedroom) and having a great time. At a certain point in the late 90's, Alewife left behind the blues-rock template, no longer relied solely on the surf music pillars of inspiration, and delved into music from distant shores and exotic climes. We left behind the road easiest traveled – and headed toward an unknown meeting point of genres. There at the crossroads we met Miguel-Alex-Beverly, who would sign on to be fellow travelers, completing the sound beautifully. The fact that I now take up the sacred responsibility of the theremin (and debut it here) also completes the tribute to him. He was certain that the instrument needed to be in the Alewife diaspora of sound ... and, true to form, he made it happen. Colin, are you listening?

He looks to ancient and folkloric musical traditions, and brings them into the modern realm of ambience and sonic possibility. ... more
